Unité d’habitation Berlin 2

Le Corbusier – Unité d‘Habitation Berlin – apartment & exterior

2019

Among architects, the Unité d’Habitation, a concrete structure containing more than 500 apartments, designed by Le Corbusier, represents a milestone in architectural thinking. The original design was executed in Marseilles, France in 1952. Five more, individually altered Unités followed until 1967. The biggest one was built in Berlin in 1958.

The Unité in Berlin is different to the rest of Le Corbusier‘s Unités. It certainly is the best maintained due to the now private ownership. Although – like almost every piece in Corbusier’s Œvre – documented incredibly well, most photographers go for the attractive and typical aspects of the building. There is a large amount of architecturally important aspects and situations, as well some not easily accessible areas, that not many have payed particular attention to.

The series is about these moments, originally taken for a photo essay in Bärbel Högner’s monography on the building.
